Childhood Cancer Awareness Month

Official proclamation from the State of Nevada Executive Department issued by the Governor.

WHEREAS, childhood cancer is the leading cause of death by disease among children in the United States; and

WHEREAS, nationally one in 285 children in the U.S. will be diagnosed with cancer before the age of 20 and one in five of our nation's children loses his or her battle with cancer. Many infants, children and teens will suffer from long-term effects of comprehensive treatment, including secondary cancers; and

WHEREAS, due to awareness and research, 85 percent of children will survive a cancer diagnosis; and

WHEREAS, the Northern Nevada Children's Cancer Foundation (NNCCF), the American Cancer Fund for Children, Inc., Kids Cancer Connection, Inc., and the Lions Clubs International are dedicated to helping these children and their families; and

WHEREAS, the American Cancer Fund for Children and Kids Cancer Connection provide a variety of vital patient psychosocial services to children undergoing cancer treatment at Sunrise Children's Hospital, Children's Medical Center at Renown Children's Hospital, Ronald McDonald House Reno, Summerlin Hospital Medical Center, UMC Children's Hospital of Nevada, Children's Specialty Center of Nevada in Las Vegas, Ronald McDonald House Las Vegas, as well as participating hospitals throughout the country; and

WHEREAS, hundreds of non-profit organizations at the local and national level including the American Childhood Cancer Organization and Northern Nevada Children's Cancer Foundation (NNCCF) are helping children with cancer and their families cope through educational, emotional, and financial support; and

WHEREAS, in 26 years the Northern Nevada Children's Cancer Foundation has provided over $12 million dollars in direct financial assistance to local families to ease the tremendous emotional and financial burden for the family; and

WHEREAS, NNCCF and the American Cancer Fund for Children and Kids Cancer Connection are committed to raising awareness of childhood cancer in Nevada during the month of September and throughout the year; 

NOW, THEREFORE, I, JOE LOMBARDO, GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF NEVADA, do hereby proclaim September 2026 as

CHILDHOOD CANCER AWARENESS MONTH IN NEVADA
